Summary

Benjamin hides in the barn loft for the entirety of the after of August 4th, avoiding the police, who have swarmed to the house to investigate the murders. He listens as the lazy officers half -heartedly search through the barn for the murder weapon before John finds him. John accuses Benjamin of killing Mr. and Mrs. Borden, though believes him when shown the ax head that Benjamin found hidden in the loft.

When Benjamin asks John about his payment, John tries to avoid the question, but Benjamin threatens to go to the police with the evidence he has collected. Their argument is interrupted by two police officers coming to canvas the barn loft for evidence. John successfully convinces them that the loft is not safe for people to stand on and they leave.

When night comes Benjamin enters the house, looks at the bodies...
