Summary

The tenth chapter begins with Benjamin waking up in the Bordens’ barn on the morning of August 4th. Outside, Lizzie finds the remnants of her pet pigeons, which her father has killed. Her anger with Mr. Borden causes Benjamin to remember his own father making him help butcher chickens as a child.

Andrew Borden comes outside and tries to explain to Lizzie why he had to kill the birds, but Lizzie angrily storms off. The scene angers Benjamin on Lizzie’s behalf. Benjamin then sees Bridget rush outside to be sick. When she returns inside, she mistakenly leaves the side door unlocked, allowing Benjamin to slip into the house, where he immediately steals a bit of the stew that has been left out.

Benjamin then moves throughout the home, getting a feel for it and the family it houses. As he explores, John happens...
