Summary

Emma arrives home to find a mass of onlookers as she returns home on the afternoon of August 4, 1892. The crowd parts as a police officer emerges from the house to beckon her inside. She goes into the house to find Lizzie looking distraught and the officer tells her that her parents have been murdered. She sits next to Lizzie in shock, and Lizzie informs her that their Uncle is there. The various people in the room, police officers and family friends, relay what has happened since that morning.

As Emma tries to cope with the shocking news, the doctor hands her a cold, wet washcloth for Lizzie. One of the officers suggests that Emma should take Lizzie upstairs to rest.
