Summary

Chapter four centers on Benjamin as he meets a man named John on August 3, 1892. The two met in an alley while relieving themselves. They strike up an amiable conversation that is interrupted by a police officer rebuking them for public indecency. When the officer becomes belligerent and begins attacking John, Benjamin assaults the policeman and he and his new friend leave.

John invites Benjamin to join him for a drink, stating that he owes Benjamin for defending him. When John offers to get Benjamin some help for a leg injury he sustained in an earlier fight, Benjamin shrugs off the suggestion. As the men get a drink at a nearby bar, John asks Benjamin to help him one more time, saying that he has a problem that needs fixing.
