Chapter 25, "The Curtain" Summary

One morning it rains, and Colin is very restless sitting on his sofa, unable to walk around in case anyone should see. Mary has an inspiration. She tells Colin about all the rooms in the house, rooms they could have to themselves. Colin thinks that a house with a hundred rooms sounds almost like another secret garden. A servant could wheel him to a different corridor, and Colin could tell him not to come back until he is sent for. Mary says there are galleries where Colin can run and they can do their exercises. Rainy days will never be awful again for them. Colin realizes that all the people in the portraits must be their relations. One looks to him like Mary, but as she was when he first met.....
