Chapter 24, "Let Them Laugh" Summary
Mrs. Sowerby often keeps her son company as he works in their vegetable garden. One night, with Mary's consent, Dickon tells her the whole saga of Misselthwaite Manor and The Secret Garden. She is hugely entertained but wonders what the staff makes of Colin. He tells her they do not know what to make of him because Colin will not let them know the truth. He continues to complain though nothing is wrong, he makes himself look weak and helpless as he is carried to his wheelchair, and he tells them that the weight he has gained from his new appetite is bloat. Colin fears that someone will write to his father if they know he walks, and then the secret will not be his to reveal. Dickon tells his mother that Mary and Colin have to cover their mouths during their play-acting so the staff do not see them...
