Chapter 23, "Magic" Summary

Mary witnesses Colin being quite rude to Dr. Craven when Colin returns to the house. She has recently learned that her own bad manners did not make her popular, and she wants to share this with Colin, who is so like her. Mary tells Colin that he is very rude, but that no one has been able to cross him because he was such a "poor thing." Colin resolves not to be spoiled, which he will achieve by going to the garden every day and being exposed to its magic. It certainly seems to them like magic during that summer. Many beautiful things grow in profusion, and the roses fulfill the promise made by their bare ropes when Mary first entered the garden. Colin comes out every day.
