Chapter 22, "When the Sun Went Down" Summary

Colin remains standing while he waits for Mary to bring Ben into the garden. He realizes that he can walk, if only he decides to. He takes Dickon's arm and walks to a tree on which he will lean while he speaks to Ben. Ben is still trying to swallow his disgust with all the world's fools and their lies about Colin. He thoughtfully suggests that Colin sit while they talk. Colin dictates to Ben the terms of the secret they all share, and insists that Ben come when he is wanted, but only when no one can see him. Ben knows about coming when no one can see, he tells Colin, because he tended to the garden by coming over the wall until his arthritis stopped him.....
