Mary is so tired that she sleeps until Martha brings her breakfast, along with news that Colin is ill and feverish as he always is after a fit of crying. Mary goes to him. Colin is disappointed when he sees that Mary has her hat on. She says she is going to Dickon but she won't be gone long, and it is something about the garden. Colin's face brightens and he lets her go. Dickon is there when Mary arrives, with his pony and two tame squirrels in his pockets, Nut and Shell.
