Martha is waiting for Mary when she comes in to tell her that Mr. Craven has returned. Something Martha's mother said when she met him on the moor has made him wish to see her. Mrs. Medlock comes to see that Mary is presentable and to bring her to her uncle. Mr. Craven appears fretful to Mary. She is stiff and curt as he asks after her welfare. He meant to get her a nurse or a governess, but he forgot her. Mary's throat tightens as she asks him please not to do so. She is too big for a nurse, she says, and asks that she please not have a governess yet. Mrs. Sowerby had said that to him, Mr. Craven says. He asks Mary.....
