Chapter 9, "The Strangest House" Summary

Mary thinks this is the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place anyone could imagine. The gray, leafless stems of climbing roses run over all the trees and the walls inside the garden, so thick that they are matted together. Some have form-swaying curtains; others have crept from one tree to another to make bridges. The bare branches look like a hazy glaze of gray over everything. Mary feels the stillness, and she whispers to herself that she is breaking ten years of silence in this place. She does not know if the profusion of stems is dead or alive, but it is very important to her to know. She does not want this garden to be dead. She examines the garden thoroughly for early life. She uses a sharp stick to clear.....
