Chapter 5, "The Cry in the Corridor" Summary

Each day Mary wakes up seems like every other day. Boredom drives her outside, and in the chill and wind of this new climate, she runs to warm herself. The unaccustomed exercise has its impact on her, and now when she wakes up in the morning she is actually hungry, her skin is not so yellow, and she has color in her cheeks. She watches the robin one day as he preens on the long garden wall at the locked garden, but as hard as she searches, Mary cannot find the door there, although she is sure there must be one.

Mary is now much more tolerant of Martha, and asks her one day why Mr. Craven hates the secret garden. Martha tells her that it was Mrs. Craven's.....
