The next morning, a young housemaid lighting a fire awakens Mary. Martha is very unlike the servants she knew in India. When Mary asks who is to dress her, she is indignant at Martha's insolence in asking if she is unable to dress herself, then enraged to learn that Martha had expected her to be Indian. Mary is suddenly overwhelmed to tears, but Martha is able to comfort and soothe her with her concern and friendliness. Martha helps Mary while she rattles on and on about her family. At first Mary is cold, disapproving of Martha's casual manner. She becomes interested in Martha's stories about her eleven sisters and brothers, especially in the ones about Dickon, a twelve-year old who tamed a wild pony. Martha serves Mary breakfast, hating to see Mary.....
