Will Barrett owns a Luger semi-automatic pistol - a 9mm handgun used by the Germans in both World War I and World War II. Will obtained the gun from his father who took it from a Nazi Colonel during his military service in World War II. The gun is apparently complete with holster that would make it quite a valuable collector's item. During the early parts of the novel, Will is intensely drawn to the Luger - and treats it as nearly a fetish. He takes it with him to inappropriate places and fires it from the side of the road so he can smell it.
