Part 1, Chapter 2 Summary

Allison wanders through Linwood, North Carolina. She is unsure where she is, why she is there, and even unsure of her own name. She buys some supplies with cash and then receives a haircut. She has a small notebook which contains notes that she has written to herself. The notes tell her that her parents have forcibly committed her to a mental hospital where she has been receiving electroconvulsive therapy. The therapy causes her to lose her memory. The notebook details an escape plan that Allison has followed to leave the asylum and travel to Linwood. She has selected Linwood as her destination, the notebook tells her, because her Aunt Sally Kemp has recently died and left Allison a large amount of land and some money as an inheritance.
