Chapter 30 Summary
Hump and Brewster build a stone hut. They discuss methods for making a suitable roof and finally decide that their only viable option is to make a roof of sealskin. Hump's execrable marksmanship threatens to exhaust the ammunition before sufficient seals are killed. Hump and Brewster therefore go on a prolonged seal-clubbing excursion and manage to create a huge stockpile of seal-meat and complete the sealskin roofing for the stone hut. Hump begins to, internally, refer to Brewster as "my woman, my mate" but does not reveal any such sentiment to her.
Chapter 30 Analysis
The description of the methods used to successfully kill seals by clubbing is lengthy and interesting. After a few abortive attempts that end when a bull seal chases Hump from the beach, Brewster instructs Hump on the proper technique, and he begins a continual slaughter of seals which lasts for several days.
