Chapter 19 Summary

The ship chases the boat, and eventually Hump makes out Johnson and Leach. The seas continue to grow heavier until the boat appears to be on the brink of swamping. Threatened with the rising seas, the boat stops trying to escape the ship and instead tries to close with the ship as the only alternative to capsizing. Larsen causes Ghost to sail alongside the boat while Hump remonstrates with Larsen, telling him the men are behaving as such only because of Larsen's domineering nature and begging clemency for them. Larsen offers Hump a covenant. He will not lay a hand on the two men if Hump agrees to never try to kill him. Hump is surprised but readily agrees. Over the next several hours, Larsen plays a game of cat-and-mouse with the boat, pulling away from them and then waiting for the boat to catch up. All...
