The next day, the storm abates, and Ghost canvasses the area looking for her lost crew and boats. Eventually all crew save four - Henderson, Holyoak, Williams and Kelly - are rescued. In the ensuing days, the seal killing continues, and Larsen manages to pick up a boat and crew from the sea and press them into service. When their own ship hails Ghost, Larsen denies any knowledge of them. For several weeks the process continues as Larsen continues to bully and terrify the crew unless he is laid up with one of his strange headaches. Another gale blows the ship far off course, and one night Johnson and Leach steal a boat and slip away toward the Japanese coast some five hundred miles distant.

When the missing boat is discovered, Larsen sails toward Johnson and Leach's probable destination and begins a comprehensive search for the absconders...
