Chapter 15 Summary

Hump remains quiet and listens to the sailors discuss the failed mutiny. The sailors light the lamp but apparently do not notice Hump hiding in the back of a bunk. Hump watches the sailors and focuses on Oofty-Oofty, a Hawaiian sailor. He notices how beautifully constructed the Hawaiian man is, comparing his pleasing physique to that of a woman and noting the beauty of his large dark eyes. The sailors are all concerned but quickly realize that Larsen needs at least most of them to sail the ship. Rather quickly, they conclude that Johnson and Leach will bear the brunt of any punishment. Hump wonders how he will be able to leave the forepeak without being attacked. Then, the hatch opens, and he is summoned to Larsen's quarters. One sailor tries to prevent Hump's departure, but Leach insists that Hump remain unmolested.
