For the next three days, Hump spends hours with Larsen in philosophical discussion. During this time, Hump's duties are tended to by a furious Mugridge. During a break in the conversation, Hump is warned by Louis that he should not become complacent in Larsen's company. Louis warns Hump that, regardless of what his relationship with Larsen seems to be, an argument will surely follow. Hump is nevertheless surprised when, after stating a particularly biting remark, Larsen responds by leaping to his feet in a rage and grabbing Hump's arm. Larsen's vise-like grip crushes Hump's biceps, and he falls to the floor in agony and then rushes from the cabin in fear and shame.

Once again a lowly cabin boy, Hump finds himself lorded over by Mugridge, who becomes progressively more abusive. Hump finally snarls at Mugridge, and a physical altercation seems imminent until Mugridge backs off. However...
