Summary

In Chapter 13, Scythe Faraday, Citra, and Rowan arrived at Fulcrum City for the Vernal Conclave. The apprentices learned that Faraday had not told the Scythedom about taking two apprentices. Faraday pointed out several scythes to Citra and Rowan, including Scythe Curie, who was known as the Grande Dame of Death for gleaning the final president and his cabinet; Scythe Goddard, who was known for leading the mass gleanings; and High Blade Xenocrates, who presided over the conclaves. The other scythe apprentices called Citra and Rowan “spats” because they were new and only good for flipping their scythe’s burgers, like spatulas. The conclave began with the Tolling of the Names, in which the scythes would each name 10 people they had gleaned over the past four months. Then, the scythes all washed their hands in a shared ceremonial basin. Citra found these rituals pointless...
