During the ghetto liquidation, Keneally takes us back to a familiar face with Poldek Pfefferberg. He has married a woman named Mila, a young doctor who came from a long line of other doctors who met the same fate as Rosalia Blau. They both lost their families, met in the ghetto, and soon married.
