Summary

In Chapter 1, the third-person narrator follows Tessa, an 18-year-old girl, on the last night of her life. She hid in the forest near the lake where high school parties were thrown while an unnamed man who she thought she could trust because he said he loved her searched the woods for her. She thought that she had lost him, so she found a path and ran down it, thinking it would lead her away, but it lead her in a circle. The man stepped out from behind a tree, grabbed her, and hit her. She tried to escape, but he took out a knife and stabbed her.
