Summary

In Chapter 4, set in 1957 with Theresa as the character of focus, as a young child, Theresa read the book Lives of the Saints like some girls read fairy tales. She learned the story behind the image of the Virgin Mary on the Miraculous Medals. At seven years old, she decided she wanted to be a nun. When Theresa discovered boys, however, the dream of being a nun was put away.

A month after Theresa and Nora arrived in America, Babs, Charlie’s brother’s fiancée, took Theresa and Nora to their first dance. It was at one of these dances that Theresa met Walter McClain.
