Point of View

Saint Maybe is written in third person past tense. The point of view alternates from the protagonist, Ian, to other characters including Agatha, Thomas and Daphne. Tyler uses varying points of view effectively in Saint Maybe to introduce material and events that are inaccessible to Ian, the protagonist. In the first chapter, from Ian's point of view, we are introduced to some of the main characters. The second chapter, from Agatha's point of view, presents information about Lucy's growing dependence on pills, and her chaotic past life that is not accessible to Ian. It is the second chapter that first introduces the concept of Agatha, Thomas and Daphne living with the Bedloes, as a wish of Agatha's. In the third chapter, from Ian's point of view, Tyler presents the Church of the Second.....
