Ian Bedloe a.k.a. "Saint Maybe"

Ian is the youngest of the three Bedloe children, the "surprise" baby, 14 years younger than Claudia. Everyone on Waverly Street remembers Ian as a happy kindergartner riding his tricycle complete with a cereal-box license plate, along the sidewalk. At the beginning of the novel, Ian is a big, easy-going, handsome high school pitcher with crowds of loyal friends. His girlfriend Cicely Brown is the prettiest girl in the class. Ian has golden-brown hair, golden skin and sleepy brown eyes. His high top tennis shoes are often held together with electrical tape. He likes to wear ragged jeans and plaid shirts open over a T-shirt to school, in violation of the dress code. Sometimes Ian fantasizes about playing baseball for the Orioles, but he knows he's not that talented. He's just a medium sort of guy.
