Old Bob Freemark drives downtown, thinking about the years of strikes, fighting, strikebreaking and stalled negotiations that have marked years of tension at Midwest Continental Steel. Many workers have not worked in some time due to the issues, and the town is becoming depressed. He meets the other union workers, including Al Garcia, Mel Riorden, Derry Howe, Richie Stoudt, Penny Williamson, Mike Michaelson, and Junior Elway. They talk about the strike, and Derry Howe warns them about other workers who are going to start getting other jobs. Old Bob thinks they need the government to do more to help them, but Derry angrily dismisses it. He is angry they will not take real action, and storms out. Junior Elway leaves soon after.
