This book is the memoir of Augusten Burroughs. In the beginning, he appears as an obsessive child, about 12 years old. Through the book, he matures into the beginning of a responsible young man.

At thirteen years old, Augusten admits that he always felt gay. Through his friendship with h Finch family, he meets his first boyfriend, 33 year old Neil Bookman. Neil and Augusten share what most would call an unhealthy relationship, where both parties behave rather selfishly. After two years, Neil disappears in the middle of the night.

Most of the problems in Augusten's life trace back to his mentally ill mother, Deidre. Largely because of her illness, her marriage breaks down and Augusten's father, Norman leaves the family. Living only with his crazy mother, Augusten retreats into himself. He obsessively tries to control.....
