Summary

Chapter Three begins with Charlie making his way home after the race. He hears his younger brother Jack crying a few houses away, commenting that “while the well-to-do filled their grand houses with music, Ma and I, along with half the neighborhood, made do with the piercing screams of hungry babies” (20). Mr. Redmond jokes with him about the upcoming

“footy” game (i.e. British football, or soccer, but with Australian rules), and Mrs. Redmond gives him a bowl of broth to take home for Jack. Both she and her husband comment on how wet and wounded Charlie is. He assures them he is fine, and then goes home.

When he arrives, a young neighbor is there, resentfully offering some scraps that she says should have gone to her dog. Ma sends her back, saying that she and her family are worth...
