Summary

As Chapter 9 continues, Khit continues to interview Marta and record the audio of their conversation with a cassette recording device. Khit suddenly feels homesick for New York, specifically because she misses her son. Marta says that her husband, Yves, died years ago. Marta now runs her home as an affordable hostel for travelers. Yves was the brother of the Tobacco Captain, who eventually had to flee his home in Laos. Khit says that she still sometimes experiences a sense of fear and distress, almost as if she will wake up one day and be back in Laos. Finally, Khit asks Marta if she knows Alisak’s current whereabouts. Marta does not seem to know, but she assures Khit that Alisak is alive and well.
