Part 1: Chapter 5 Summary

In 6th grade, Molly sits next to Leota B. Bisland, a girl she describes as the most beautiful girl she has ever seen. Leota is shy and so Molly tries hard to make her laugh, which unfortunately gets her into trouble with the teacher.

Molly's teacher, Miss Potter, decides that Molly should use some of her energy in a constructive way and so she casts her as the lead in the school's Christmas play. They play is about the nativity of Jesus and Molly will be playing the role of the Virgin Mary. This news angers Cheryl Spiegelglass who insists that a "good girl" play the Virgin Mary.

Nevertheless, Miss Potter sticks with her decision and Molly spends the next several weeks immersed in rehearsals. During this period, she admits to wishing women.....
