In Chapter 2, it is the summer of 1956 and Molly is eleven years old. Because of financial difficulties, Molly and her family have moved in with her cousin Leroy's family.
One day, after having spent several hours in a potato patch picking bugs off the potatoes, Molly and Leroy decide to go to the local store for a soda. While enjoying their snack outside the store, Molly spots an empty Sunmaid raisin box and tells Leroy that she has plans for that box. As she does, a classmate named Barbara Spangenthau enters the store. As Barbara exit the store, Molly asks her to tell Earl Stambach, a boy that lives near Barbara that Molly is looking for him.
