Summary

Aug. 14, 1944 – In this entry, Rose recounts Maddie’s wedding. Maddie’s husband, Jamie, is an earl’s son, and his family lives in a castle. Jamie’s oldest brother and youngest sister, who was Maddie’s best friend, were both killed in the war. Jamie’s mother has taken in eight refugee children who were evacuated from Glasgow. Rose recalls how Jamie’s family was “so happy to have something to celebrate – almost desperate with it” (23). Both Maddie and Rose wore their ATA uniforms for the wedding. Maddie placed her bouquet below her friend’s name on the family memorial plaque in the church where she was married.

On the train ride back to the aerodrome, Rose finds out through a slip of the tongue that Maddie’s friend, Julie, died in France and that she was probably a spy or something...
