Hunter Loggins and Lawton Loggins

Hunter Loggins and Lawton Loggins are brothers. They are the sons of Hiram Loggins. Their storyline takes place in the present day. Hunter, the younger brother, is a college student majoring in history, and Lawton is a Navy SEAL. After the death of their father, they decide to travel down the Altamaha river in canoes and spread their father’s ashes in the ocean, as their father had loved that river. Hunter and Lawton’s dynamics is loving, but they do not express their brotherly love directly. Instead, they generally rely on jokes and interest in one another’s life experiences.

The narrative sometimes directly conveys Hunter’s thoughts and feelings, but it never does so for Lawton. As the brothers’ trip down the river progresses, Hunter gradually becomes aware of the fact that Lawton believes that there father’s death may have involved...
