Point of View

This novel is told from the first-person point of view of Annemarie. For instance, when Annemarie mounts Harry for a competition, she narrates: “I forgive him, this time, for not standing still while I mount because while it’s terrible manners there are extenuating circumstances and I, too, cannot be still” (1). She refers to herself as “I” indicating that she is narrating what is happening from her point of view. This first-person point of view is important because it allows the reader to become very familiar with Annemarie and her emotional status. She narrates that she never really recovered from the accident that killed Harry and temporarily paralyzed her. Her emotional status was worsened when she was fired from her job, left by her husband, and learned her father was suffering with ALS.
