Summary

Charlotte was kicked in the face while shoeing a horse. She woke up in the doctor’s office. The doctor told her he knew she was female. He had seen other women pretending to be men before. He promised to keep her secret. He told Charlotte she would not be able to drive for a while and that no one would want to hire her with “only one good eye” (78).

The next day, Charlotte waited outside the doctor’s office for James to pick her up. People stared and asked questions.

On the way back to the stable, Charlotte asked James when she could drive again. He told her that he and Frank had decided she could not drive because of her eye. However, they said she could be a stock tender. Charlotte started to cry and could not stop.
