Summary

Hayward brought Charlotte a bundle of clothing. He asked her how he would be able to find her. Charlotte told him she knew where he would be and would find him. She gave him a bracelet made from half the leather strap she wore around her wrist. She cried when they parted.

Charlotte knew it might be easier to stay at the orphanage where she knew she would have a place to sleep and food to eat. However, “she wouldn’t have the things she loved” (34). She was afraid to run away, but more afraid to stay.
