Summary

Chapter 18 is from Jamie's perspective. Deputy Davis had already told Jamie about catching Gillette and Sunny at the pool, and Jamie knew he had probably told everyone in town by now, which made Jamie decide not to make it an issue. Jamie was not surprised when Gillette told him about it during their 100-mile drive to Philadelphia, Mississippi, that morning. Jamie had run away with Miranda when he was 18. They had a baby neither was ready to raise, and Miranda left. Jamie's parents died in a car wreck when Parnell was only eight. Jamie sent Parnell to live with relatives and sent Sunny to live with her Meemaw, and he lived alone in the big house, spending the money he inherited from his parents.
