Section 3 Summary

One day, Father said to Sammy that he thought it was odd how Mother felt about the new barn. The barn was finished shortly, and Father had planned to move his cows into the barn, but had to go out of town unexpectedly. He needed to go to see Hiram, Mrs. Penn's brother, to pick up a horse that Hiram had been keeping an eye on for him. When it is time for Adoniram to leave, Mother laid out clean clothes for him, along with getting his razor and shaving supplies ready. When he was cleaned up, she buttoned his collar for him, and set him along with a packed lunch. When he left, he said that if the cows arrived while he was gone, Sammy could put them into the new barn. He almost seemed to be apologetic, but was obviously fighting...
