Merivel bids good-bye to his servant Will, who weeps as Merivel leaves. He makes his way to the Tower of London, now a monument to dead English kings. He visits the animals now kept there, lions, tigers and the like, with the names of dead kings including Henry, Edward, Charles and James. Upon beholding these mangy animals, the full terror of his banishment hits him. Leaving, he travels to Rosie Pierpont's. He stays with her a while, but he realizes he can't stay there permanently and journeys on to Bath and the ancient Roman Pools, where he immerses himself in the warm waters.
