Illusion and Disillusion
The novel posits illusions as ideas that simplify life, and mask the complexity and chaos of life. Micah makes use of illusions to streamline his lifestyle and decision making process, however, reality catches up with Micah's illusions, and this leads to crises that jeopardize his relationships. Micah creates illusions about everything from people and events in his past, to the objects that he encounters every day. The novel depicts Micah as enjoying his illusions. He is seduced by the simplistic view of life that they offer him. However, when the illusions begin to erode in the face of reality, Micah denies reality and becomes indifferent to it, at the expense of his relationships.
