Vision

Vision symbolizes Micah's inability to see the larger picture in his life, whether that means fully grasping others' emotions, understanding himself, or taking a long-term view of his prospects and goals. The symbol of vision operates on both a literal level as well as more abstract and symbolic levels. For example, in the case of the latter, there is Micah's inability to see Lorna for who she really is. When Micah is in college, he gains clues that Lorna has been acting promiscuously, which he is unable to believe because it is contrary to the way that he views Lorna. The same lack of vision applies to Cass as well. In chapter one, her behavior is viewed by Micah as opposed to the "no-nonsense woman" (10) that he thinks her to be.
