Summary

In Chapter 9, Mock is now 14 years old. Wendi dolls her up in makeup, a wig, and a halter pantsuit for a playful photo shoot. Mock is crushed when she sees the photos, noticing her developing Adam’s apple and shapely arms and shoulders. During this time, Mock struggles with her body image. Meanwhile, her mother begins dating a man named Rick, who Mock discovers is the long-lost ex-con father of her older sisters. He is violent and abusive. Cori moves out, and Mock and her brothers and mother move to Salt Lake.

In Chapter 10, Mock begins at Moanalua High School. She excels in her academics, volleyball, and band and becomes friends with the other girls at school. Meanwhile, she and Wendi start “pooching,” a term meaning hustling “rides, money, or anything from guys,” travelling between their houses, schools, and the mall...
