Chapter XXIII Summary

Shockingly the woods once again poured forth more brown-suited soldiers. Henry felt a sense of self-confidence as he watched them dodge and weave to avoid the shells that were headed their way. Off to the side he saw two blue regiments engaged with two brown regiments and for a minute, they looked as if their fighting were over some personal matter, not a major battle in this war.

The fighting continued with maniacal frenzy. Everywhere he looked, there were wild rushes of men surging backward and then forward. His own regiment rushed out when their time came in a barbaric cry of pain and rage. Henry remained absorbed in watching the action as he was still in place bearing the flag. The enemy came so close to their line that their faces could be.....
