Chapter XIII Summary
Suddenly Henry saw the dark waves of men coming toward him as they swept out of the wood and fields. They were charging toward him like terrified beasts. The cannons were still blasting and he was horror-stricken as he watched them close in on him. The battle was lost and these men were running for their lives. He found himself caught up in the midst of them and began to run and ask questions about what had happened. No one answered him or even seemed to see him. Finally, he asked the man next to him to tell him what was happening and the man hit him on the head with the butt of his rifle. His head seemed to be full of lightning and thunder all at the same time and he fell to his knees. Finally, he got back on his feet and lurched forward, swooning and swaying...
