Summary

Pages 259 - 298 -- The crew of the Oreius make stew from polar bear liver, but Eivor refuses to eat any because she knows it is toxic. The men do not believe her warnings, and instead say that she cursed the stew when their skin begins peeling off after eating it.

The perspective shifts to the daughter, who skips school with Ash to go see Gin Percival's trial. She thinks about Yasmine's homemade abortion, and how she damaged her uterus so badly it had to be removed. The daughter becomes distressed during the trial, because of the testimony about abortion.

The narrative moves to the biographer, who also attends the trial. She watches the prosecution refer to Gin as a witch. She sees Mattie at the courthouse, and learns that Mattie was unable to make it into Canada. She is unable to bring herself to...
