Summary

Pages 189 - 220 -- The wife is at a holiday assembly at the high school with her family. She receives a call from Edward Tilghman, an old law school classmate, who says he is in town for a case. She imagines his thoughts when he sees her, and sees how she has aged and gained weight. Ro is there, and the wife wishes she could "be a good person" who will "be happy if Ro gets pregnant" (192). She compares her life to Ro's, and decides that her family is her purpose in life, and so she has done enough in her life. She imagines telling Didier that she slept with Bryan, and realizes that she is too afraid to leave her marriage, and wants Didier to leave first.
