Summary

In Book One, "Barry, November 2, 2018," NYPD detective Barry Sutton responds to a suicide attempt at the top of the Poe Building. He attempts talking the woman, Ann Voss Peters, off the edge. She refuses to move, telling him she has False Memory Syndrome, or FMS. She says the month prior, she suddenly received a new set of memories she never experienced. In an attempt to understand what was happening to her, she tracked down her false husband, Joe, but he did not know her. Her false memories also told her his alternate wife, Franny, jumped from the Poe Building. Ann thought if she tried the same, Joe would rescue her to atone for his failure to save Franny. Because Joe does not arrive, Ann throws herself over.
