Pat observes that the date is sometime in May. He picks up his "new" automobile from the dealer who informs Pat that his "wife" bought the car as a birthday surprise. Pat takes the car back to his apartment and speaks with Lila. For the past several days Lila has heeded Hardesty's request and left Pat more or less alone. Now, however, she speaks to him in a slightly flirtatious way and informs him that the automobile was supposed to be a birthday surprise - even though Pat's birthday was two months in the past.
