Chapters 1 - 20 Summary

Chapter 1 - Emma Thomas falls asleep while doing homework, and wakes up when Jack, her younger brother, comes to get her for dinner. Emma also has an even younger brother named Leyla. Emma's aunt, Carol, talks about her hard day at work, while her husband, George, comforts her. The next morning, Emma's friend Sara McKinley picks her up for school. They attend Wesyln High School in Weslyn, Connecticut. Sara asks about her evening, and Emma hides the bruises on her arms. Sara is stunningly beautiful and very popular, but her looks don't go to her head. But Sara wants a boy named Jason Stark, whom she is convinced doesn't know she exists. Emma does very well in school, and is proud of her grades. Emma wonders if Jason is simply unaware that Sara wants him.
